CBI NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS

CBI NEWS AND EVENTS FEBRUARY 3 - 12, 2012

BIKKUR HOLIM:  Our friend, Lou Davis, has been at Mass General since Friday, and the Davis family will likely need some support when they return home.  A Lotsa Helping Hands website has been set up for them https://www.lotsahelpinghands.com/c/653121/login/  and it is being circulated through LGA, CBI and among friends.

Jen and Lou are upbeat and grateful for the support.  If you are on Facebook, please feel free to check Lou’s page for updates.  Our thoughts and prayers are with them for a refu’ah shlemah, a healing of body and soul, and we look forward to welcoming Lou and Jen back to the community.

KIDDUSH:  This Shabbat’s Kiddush is in honor of Larry Hott’s Torah reading.  We thank Susan Mosler, Alan Peterfreund,  Dorothy Nemetz and John Todd for sponsoring this Kiddush.

SHABBAT CHILDCARE:  Free drop-in childcare is available from 9:45 am to the end of each Shabbat morning service for children ages 1 - 8. We are looking for donations of new or gently used books, games, puzzles and preschool toys. If you have any questions please contact Amy Wolpin at wolpin.amy@gmail.com.

CBI KIDDUSH CORPS NEEDS A VOLUNTEER:   The Kiddush Corps needs a volunteer to take the linens to Northampton Rental on Monday and pick them up on Friday every week.  If you are a parent of an LGA or Gan Keshet child and live in the South Street area, it would not be much of an inconvenience and would be greatly appreciated.  If you can volunteer please contact the front office at 413 584-3593 or email bnai.israel@verizon.net.

THE LGA VIDEO NEEDS YOUR VOTES:  The Avi Chai Foundation created the Jewish Day School Video Academy to help eligible Jewish day schools improve their use of online video.  Please visit the Video Academy website and vote for the LGA video submission – this would help LGA win a $10,000 Avi Chai Video Academy Award, which would bring national attention to our Pioneer Valley Jewish community. Then go to LGA's Facebook page and share the voting link with your friends and family.  Voting is open until February 5th.  Thank you.

HEBREW WINTER CLASSES WITH HENNY LEWIN:  You can still sign up for the Winter Hebrew classes which began on January 24 and continue through April 3.  There will be no class on February 7.  The following classes are offered:  Beginning Prayer Book Hebrew at 5:30 pm; Advanced Beginning Modern Hebrew at 6:45 pm and Hebrew Literacy at 8:00 pm.  Please contact Henny Lewin at 413 253-8836 or by email at hennylewin@yahoo.com.  For more information please pick up a flyer on the shelf next to the sanctuary door.

CBI COMMUNITY SCHOLARS SERIES: A POTLUCK DINNER:   Join us after services on Friday, February 3 at around 7:00pm for a potluck dinner at LGA.  Rabbi David Seidenberg will lead a mini-Seder before the potluck.  Please click here for the flyer with much more important information.  Rabbi David Seidenberg is a theologian, dancer, an advocate for embodied Judaism and one of the foremost scholars working on Judaism and ecology today. He will join us both Friday and Saturday for Shabbat Shirah--the Sabbath of song which precedes Tu Bish'vat.  Rabbi Seidenberg will also lead us in a spirited Prayground Minyan Kabbalat Shabbat service, share ground-breaking research from his new book on ecology and Kabbalah and teach us about Tu Bish'vat. Find out more about his work at neohasid.org and join us at 6:00 pm on Friday, February 3 and during Kiddush on Saturday, February 4.

TOT SHABBAT WITH PEGGY WALKER:  Come join us on February 4 at 11:00 am for a lively Saturday morning program that celebrates the beautiful aspects of Shabbat through songs, stories, dance and creative movement.  For 3 to 5 year olds and their families.

TU B’SHEVAT CELEBRATION:  Come celebrate with the CBI Religious School on Sunday, February 5, from 10:30 am – noon.  Join us for activities, games and holiday munchies.  For more information call Rabbi Selch, extension 203, or email cbieducation@verizon.net.

THE WORLD OF THE ZOHAR:  Join us as we continue to pursue our journey with the Zohar, the classic work of medieval Jewish mysticism.  In many ways, the Zohar has shaped Jewish tradition, and its explorations mirror many of our contemporary spiritual and ethical questions.  Our initial introduction generated much enthusiasm, and we can look forward to participating in a series of lively and engaging study sessions.  Dates of classes are February 9, 14, & 28 from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm.

LEV CHADASH (NEW HEART MINYAN):  Join us on February 11 at 9:45-12:00 noon for a special Lev Chadash led by Rabbi Andrea Cohen-Keener.  This monthly, alternative Shabbat service follows the deep structure of the Siddur and invites us – through song and silence, conversation and meditation – to cultivate awareness of and connection to our rich, Jewish tradition.  We will experience the entire flow of a morning Shabbat service (including Torah reading and teaching/ discussion), but with scaled-down liturgy.  Come with the hope of renewing your heart and your connection to the Source of Life.

SHABBAT FAMILY MINYAN (FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS):  Join us for a Shabbat Family Minyan, a creative interactive service featuring prayers, songs and stories.  For school-aged children, their parents and the community on February 11 at 11:00 am.

HEVREI MITZVOT MEN’S CLUB: Please join us for our Men’s Club meeting on February 12 at 9:45 am at LGA.  The usual superb ethnic breakfast will be served.  Special guest John Clayton will be discussing his inspired work, Mitzvah Man, and its implications for the hevrei.  Copies will be available for sale at the talk.

BIKKUR HOLIM will have a meeting led by Becky Jones and Nancy Flam on issues pertaining to visiting the sick at the hospital. The meeting, on February 14, from 7-8:30 pm, will be held at the home of Norbert Goldfield, 72 Laurel Park, Northampton, MA 01060. Drinks and snacks will be provided. Please RSVP at rin8312011@gmail.com

FEBRUARY COT SHELTER: The CBI Sisterhood is preparing and serving the dinner at the Northampton Cot Shelter on Wednesday, February 22.  Please consider signing up to provide part of the meal and/or to set up, serve the food, visit with cot shelter guests and clean up afterward.  Please contact Diane Garey at diane@florentinefilms.org or 413 727 8117 to sign up.

GOT SCRIP? GET SCRIP.   Grocery store cards for Stop & Shop, Big Y, River Valley Market and Serio's Market are available in the CBI office. Ask about the super-convenient automatic monthly purchase option. Your use of scrip can have a substantial beneficial impact on our fundraising operations.  And we all need to eat.

GREAT GIFTS:  Shop locally starting with Northampton Chamber Gift Cards purchased at CBI. These cards are good at over 65 Northampton merchants.  Make sure that you have enough grocery store scrip, too, for your meal purchases (including cot shelter donations).

THE GARDEN:  Contribute to the garden fund and enjoy garden images all year by buying a photo note card, available in the office.  Thank you.
