Looking for a place to celebrate Purim? Curious about Jewish traditions? Just looking for an excuse to dress up in costumes, eat sweets, and yell at the top of your lungs!? Join us for Purim 5785!

Purim is a joyous Jewish holiday that commemorates the biblical story of Queen Esther, who helped save the Jewish people from persecution in ancient Persia. It’s a time for celebration, community, and giving back—all with a fun and festive spirit!

Get ready for Purim-spiel based on everybody’s favorite anti-fascist musical- Wicked. Expect some high-flying choreography, shmaltzy musical numbers filled with unforgettable puns, and a story that ties together the struggles of the ancient Babylonian Jews to the Happy Valley Bubble-onian Jews of our very own shul. If you're looking for a joyful way to fight back against the Hamans of the world- come be part of the fun!

Our celebrations and programs will focus on this holiday's four mitzvot: the Megillah reading, Mishloach Manot (giving gifts of food to friends and neighbors), a festive Seudah (feast), and opportunities for Matanot Le’evyonim (donations to those in need).

Our celebrations will highlight key traditions of Purim:

🎭 The story of Purim comes to life with a dramatic and comedic reading of the Book of Esther. Expect costumes, audience participation, song, dance, and plenty of noise—especially when we drown out the name of the villain, Haman!

🥳 Costumes & Festive Atmosphere – People of all ages dress up in fun costumes—some inspired by the Purim story, others just for fun. Feel free to join in!

🎁 Mishloach Manot – sharing gift baskets of food with friends and neighbors

💙 Matanot La’evyonim – charitable giving, this year to our partners, neighbors, and friends over at the Survival Center.

Please register or volunteer for ALL events you plan on attending.

Adult Ed Purim Classes, March 4 & 12

Making Sense of Chapter Nine with Rabbi Ariella
Tuesday, March 4, 7:00-8:30 pm, in person and on Zoom (link after registration)

When recounting the story of Purim, we often skip over Chapter Nine of the Megillah, in which the Jewish people are granted permission to violently take revenge against those who sought their demise. We'll study the words of this chapter, and discuss and wrestle with its themes (including Jewish victimhood, power, and revenge). We will also consider this story in the context of living as Jews in this post-October 7th world. All perspectives are welcome, with the expectation that participation will include listening with an open heart and mind.

The Surprising Connections between Purim and Yom Kippur
with Rabbi Jacob Fine
Wednesday, March 12, 7:00-8:30 pm, in person and on Zoom (link after registration)

On the surface of things, Purim and Yom Kippur appear as though they are total opposites—with Purim’s focus on feasting and merry making, and Yom Kippur’s solemnity and denial of sensory pleasure. And yet, according to tradition, these two holidays are spiritually connected. We will explore these connections with the hope that they might deepen our understanding and experience of both festivals.

Purim with the Ohel Minyan, March 14

The Ohel Minyan will hold a morning megillah reading as part of morning minyan [on Friday March 14], starting at 8:15am in the Water Building Garage. A breakfast will follow, with cereal and pie for Pie Day. There will also be challah to enable us to fulfill the mitzvah of a se'udah. All are welcome!
