Kabbalat Shabbat means receiving or welcoming Shabbat, we do so through psalms and a kabbalistic (Jewish mystical) prayer called Lecha Dodi. This service is meant to serve as a bridge between the hectic nature of the week and the peaceful arrival of Shabbat. The second part of the evening is Ma’ariv, the evening service, which includes prayers acknowledging the arrival of nighttime, and core Jewish prayers such as the Shema and the Amidah, with special paragraphs about Shabbat. Friday night services (often referred to in their entirety as Kabbalat Shabbat) are often songful, reflective, and offer a spiritually meaningful way to leave the past week behind and enter into the holy time of Shabbat.
