Bio

My family and I have been active members of CBI for 35 years, since the early 1990s. Our two daughters attended the Religious School and celebrated their Bat Mitzvahs at CBI in 2000 and 2004. For many years, I was privileged to serve as Gabbai Sheni on Shabbat morning and holiday services. I have served on the Board and on the Ritual Committee; I was pleased to be part of the Boards that took steps to ensure the flourishing of Gan Keshet, Alma religious school, and Abundance Farm. My own career as a professor and scholar of Jewish history and thought at Smith College has led me to teach Adult Ed courses at CBI and to participate as a student in others’ courses as well. I would like to continue to help foster amongst us a culture of engaged and creative learning of Judaism, Jewish texts and rituals, and Jewish history. My scholarship gives me a broad perspective on different Jewish communities around the world, past and present. To our local, communal tasks, I bring a sense of history, of connection to the Jewish world past and present, of responsibility and deep caring for CBI. Let's do our best to inspire, challenge, and support one another in the strengthening of our intergenerational, diverse, talented, principled, and nurturing community.
