Elijah at the Seder: From Fiery Prophet to Mysterious Guest Led by Rabbi Jacob
Why do we pour a cup for Elijah and open the door for him at the Passover Seder? In this class, we will explore how the rabbis reimagined Elijah from the fierce biblical prophet of 1 Kings and 2 Kings into a wandering figure who appears throughout the Talmud to teach, solve mysteries, and offer moments of unexpected redemption. Through a selection of classic texts, we will trace how Elijah’s character evolves in rabbinic tradition and consider why he ultimately becomes a central presence at the Seder table.
